13 Reasons Why: The Biggest Hit of Spring 2017

"'13 Reasons Why' is Netflix's Best New Show in Years

"13 Reasons Why" is a Netflix Original Drama that was recently released, on March 31st, 2017. Since it's release just a little over one week ago the series has taken the entertainment world by storm.

The story revolves around a teenage girl who has recently committed suicide. She leaves a set of tapes detailing each of the 13 reasons that drove her to commit suicide. The tapes end up in the hands of her crush, all around shy kid, Clay Jensen. As Clay listens to the tapes he begins to see Hannahs life unfurl and understand the people around him and what they did to her.

I binged the entire series in about 2 days when it first came out. The show is phenomenal and it is no wonder that it has sparked a conversation about the nature of high school including topics such as sexual assault, slut-shaming, bullying, and suicide.  "13 Reasons Why" is one of the first teen dramas I have encountered that hasn't sugar-coated the vile things that can and DO happen in modern high schools.

Over the past week, the series has been praised for its groundbreaking originality. The young actors have quickly risen to stardom and are utilizing the power the show has given to continue the dialogue about tough topics.

In today's society, so many kids are bullied and many do commit suicide. Having a show like "13 Reasons Why" is allowing for people, especially between parents and their children to have the honest conversations about their feelings and help others understand what it must be like to be bullied to the point of killing oneself.

Overall, I would recommend this show to most if it's relevancy and power in recent media isn't proof enough then I don't know what is. "13 Reasons Why" is a must watch for all.
